本書『ハンマースホイとヨーロッパ』の目的は「同時代の国際的なコンテクストの中にハンマースホイの芸術を位置づけること(to place Hammershoi's art within the international context in which it was created)」にあり、したがって、同時代の画家たちの作品との比較検討によってそこに明白な類似(obvious parallels)を見出すことに重点が置かれているので、ハンマースホイだけでなく、ファンタン=ラトゥールやクノップフをはじめとする同時代のヨーロッパの画家たちの作品も多数掲載されています。
