本書はもっていなかったのですがアマゾンマケプレで新品が送料込で3,000円以下で売られていたので(定価は40ドル)注文しておいたのが届いたのでよんでみました。

これはどういう本かというと、エドワード・ゴーリーが1950年代に出版社に就職して手がけた本の表紙(カバー)絵を中心に、絵本作家として認知されて以降も続けられた自著以外のブックカバーの仕事を概観した画集(書影集)であります。
ふだんはあまり見られないゴーリーのハイセンスな色彩感覚が存分に堪能できるであります。
同じ著者・編者によるものはデザインに統一感を持たせているであります。
本書の巻頭論文を書いているスティーヴン・ヘラーは同じタイトル(「Edward Gorey's Cover Story」)で生前のゴーリーにブックカバーの仕事についてインタビューしているので(ゴーリーのインタビュー集『Ascending Peculiarity(どんどん変に)』に収録されています)、併読されるとよいです。

本書に掲載されている本(1ページ1点、裏表紙も描いているものは見開きでカラー印刷されています)は、
①表紙(カバー)のみを担当しているもの
②表紙(カバー)と本文挿絵(イラスト)を担当しているもの
③共作絵本(ゴーリー以外の人が文章を書いている絵本)
の三つに分けられます(他にブックデザインの仕事用のビジネスカード(業務用名刺)と、ゴーリー自身による児童書デザイン講習会のパンフレット(ブックカバーを模したデザインになっています)の図版も掲載されています)。②と③のうち主要なものはゴーリー没後に復刊されて現在も入手可能ですが、これらは表紙絵だけを見せられても隔靴掻痒感が否めないので、本書では①に徹底して欲しかったと思わずにいられませんが、それはそれでよいです。
