Charles Simic 『The Life of Images: Selected Prose』

「Only the individual is real, I kept saying over and over again. I praised the outcast, the pariah, while my people were offering me an opportunity to become a part of a mystic whole. I insisted on remaining aloof, self absorbed, lovingly nursing my suspicions.」
(Charles Simic 「Elegy in a Spider's Web」

Why I Like Certain Poems More than Others

Reading Philosophy at Night

Notes on Poetry and Philosophy
「I like a poem that understates, that leaves out, breaks off, remains open-ended. A poem as a piece of the unutterable whole. To "complete," to pretend that it is possible to do so (and here, too, I'm following Heidegger), is to set arbitrary boundaries to what is boundless.」

The Flute Player in the Pit
『The Best American Poetry』序文。
「Once every seven years, the member of this remote tribe would dig a deep hole in the jungle and lower their finest fute player into it. He would be given no food, only a little water and no way of climbing out. After this was done, the other members of the tribe would bid him goodbye, never to return. Seven days later, the flute player, sitting crosslegged at the bottom of his hole, would begin to play. Of course, the tribesmen could not hear him, only the gods could, and that was the point.」

Food and Happiness

The Little Venus of the Eskimos
「I open myself to chance in order to invite the unknown.」

Fried Sausage

Elegy in a Spider's Web
「Only the individual is real, I kept saying over and over again. I praised the outcast, the pariah, while my people were offering me an opportunity to become a part of a mystic whole. I insisted on remaining aloof, self-absorbed, lovingly nursing my suspicions.」

Shop, Le Bacarès

No Cure for the Blues
「At their best my records would sound like rain, a summer downpour in the city when everyone runs for cover, at their worst like a sausage patty being fried in a pan. It didn't matter. Sadness and happiness would well up in me with the first few notes. Why is it, I said to myself one night, that listening to the music I feel a homesickness for a vanished world that I was never a part of?」

Charles the Obscure

In Praise of Invective
「At the end of a murderous century, let's curse the enemies of the individual.」
「My aesthetic says that the poet is true because he or she cannot be labeled. It is the irreducible uniqueness of each life that is worth honoring and defending. If at times one has to fall back on the vocabulary of abuse to keep those in the gumming business away, so be it.」
「How are we to defend ourselves against these monsters dividing the members of society into useful and useless? For them, the ideal citizen is a voluntary slave!」

Orphan Factory

The Trouble with Poetry

Cut the Comedy

「It is also worth remembering that the bombing of civilians is rarely punished as a crime.」
「What happens, instead, is that the two warring sides become allies against the civilians in the middle.」
「In modern warfare, it has become much safer to be in the military than to be a noncombatant.」

Reading About Utopia in New York City
