Deborah Solomon 『Utopia Parkway: The Life and Work of Joseph Cornell』 (Other Press)

「He continued to correspond with his many friends, but there could be no pretending that he had much news to report. Cornell's last letter to Donald Windham was mailed in a translucent envelope, on which he wrote, "No need to open."」

本書の旧版はMFA(Museum of Fine Arts)の再刊本で持っているのですが、新版の序文によると、本文は大幅に改訂されて(「This new edition of *Utopia Parkway* is amply revised. I have cut dated material and added new findings.」)、さらに活字もよみやすくなって紙質もよくなって以前は無かったカラー図版も掲載されているということなので、せっかくなので新版で再読してみました。

「Cornell was always quick to assert that he never joined up with the Surrealist movement, as if fearful of being linked with its naughty activities. Yet secretly, it seems, he was fascinated by the movement, and in general his feelings for Surrealism echoed the ambivalent nature of many of his other attachments. He had a passionate desire to be part of the art scene, and an alternating desire to pull back, to be insular and private and alone. His conflicted feelings extended to his work as well: he emulated the latest developmens out of Paris, but in his own furtive way.
As much as the French Surrealists provided the context in which Cornell made his earliest collages and *objets*, they were also the impetus behind the various cinematic projects Cornell now undertook.」

「Cornell was always quick to assert that he never joined up with the Surrealist movement. Yet their influence on him cannot be doubted. They provided the context in which Cornell made his earliest collages and objets, and they were also the impetus behind the various cinematic projects Cornell now undertook.」

「Kusama enjoys a substantial reputation for her soft cloth sculptures and for pattern-based paintings that prefigured American Minimalism, but her creations inside the studio pale beside her antics outside it. She came to New York from Tokyo in 1957, eager to make a name for herself and, like Yoko Ono, turned to performance art to generate attention.」

「Kusama enjoys a stellar reputation for her obsessively patterned paintings and sculptures, which include a huge, yellow pumpkin covered with a rhythmic array of black polka dots. In the early sixties, she came to attention after she organized a series of happenings.」
